This month’s spotlight features APM Senior Construction Superintendent, Steve Chambers! Steve is a Boilermaker tig welder by trade. He worked his way up as a foreman, general foreman, and became a Superintendent in 1996. He came over to APM when GE bought Alstom 9 years ago, but he has 41 years of experience in this business! At work, Steve is a Superintendent, but outside of work, he is a husband, parent, and Grandpa. What’s one thing that surprised you about working with APM?

 

The opportunity to attend the seminars in Pasadena.

 

What is a typical workday for you?

 

Quoting jobs, pre-planning awarded jobs, readiness reviews, and reviewing the outage objectives with my supervision and the crew. During the outage, I attend the tailboards, observe and give coaching if required, and conduct hazard hunts. I also turn over the report of what dayshift has accomplished and what the nightshift crew needs to accomplish.

 

What energizes you at work?

 

Working with the very talented tradesmen, no injuries, no incidents, no rework, and having the scope of work completed as planned.

 

What do you find the most challenging in your role?

 

Working away from home for long periods of time.

 

What do you like most about working with APM?

 

APM supports and trusts me in running the jobs the way I feel they should be executed.

 

How has APM helped you in your career development?

 

Most of my career I have worked on the Utility Steam Powered Boiler with APM. I’m learning more about the HRSG and the OTSG up north in Fort McMurray.

 

What courses, certifications, or programs did you complete?

 

Numerous courses including Better supervision, Computer courses, Orbital welding operator and Technician, Practical loss control leadership, and Lean training.

What is your proudest moment with APM?

 

Mackay River Cogen Bundle Replacements. Having my son as part of my Outage supervision team.

Who has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?

 

I have worked with many smart, hard-working colleges, engineers, and tradesmen over my career. I have learned from them all.

 

How do you prefer to spend your days off?

 

With my family and friends, camping, hiking, quadding, sledding, Maui beaches, car trips, and playing with my grandkids.

 

How do you balance your career at APM and family?

 

Work hard and play hard.

 

What advice do you have for prospective APM candidates?

 

I have a saying “Trust but Verify”. Try hard to be out on the floor more than in the office.

 

What is a non-work-related accomplishment that you’re proud of?

 

My kids and how successful they are with their families and their careers.
