Get the Buzz ... | Steam Fossil Wins in Mississippi!

In March of 2024, a team from APM Steam Fossil travelled to Mississippi for an outage. Prior to outage execution, the crew conducted several meetings with the Project Manager to align on critical path as well as shipping dates for departing components. While on the job, the ten-person crew was tasked with a Generator and Valve Major.

Although the crew prepared for the task with careful consideration and detail, they encountered a challenge during the process. According to Superintendent, Jesse Carpenter, “A STOP moment occurred when we had the task of removing the field from the stator and were in the process of setting it on cribbing to re-rig the field. As we started to touch off the field on the cribbing, it looked as if it could possibly fail so we stopped and picked the field back up with the crane.” The crew then analyzed the available stacks of cribbing and was able to find an ample replacement to apply to the task at hand.

Throughout the job, the crew was assigned a crane to use for heavy lifting operations. Understanding the responsibility of proper crane usage, the team utilized the Mechanical Lifting Life Saving Rule to maintain safety. Jesse had this to say on the procedure, “We had to make sure that all travel path areas were barricaded, and we communicated with other contractors when we had a lift that was near their work area. When we were moving the field to the crane bay, we had all work stopped and personnel evacuated on the floor below the turbine deck. This was all possible by the great communication between us, the customer, and all other contractors on site.”

We are immensely proud of the Steam Fossil team’s performance onsite! The 4,000-manhour outage was executed with safety and quality at the forefront of the operation. Congrats and HUGE kudos to Jesse Carpenter, Todd Mielke, Juan Ramirez, Danny Keaton, and the rest of the crew for your success in Mississippi!
