CEO Reflections... Employee Survey Results

APM Team,

This week I asked Katie Maldonado, our Communications Director, to share with us a summary of our recent Employee Experience Survey results. Katie along with others have spent a good amount of time studying the results, and are now beginning to make recommendations for us to act on the results. I echo her below sentiments: Thank YOU to those who shared your feedback – it is a gift. We are not perfect, but we are working to make APM THE place to work in our industry.

At the start of summer, we relaunched our Employee Experience (EX) Survey. The goal for this annual process is to LISTEN to YOU … to better understand what YOU value. This helps us know where we meet your expectations and where we could improve your experience.

Thank you to every employee who provided feedback through this voluntary process. Even though the summer can be a difficult time to catch all employees, we had 287 out of 599 employees (48% engagement) choose to share insights. This is still down 16% from last year, and we will work to understand the key reasons for this trend.

Overall, our core success question of “APM has the right culture for us to be successful in the future” produced a positive response rate of 77% in agreement. This is 1% higher than our score last year and still beats out the industry benchmark at 71% for this question across similar companies in North America.

Additionally, our safety question of “APM is a very safe place to work” produced a positive response rate of 91% in agreement. As our keystone, we are proud that this score received the most favorable response among all survey questions and increased by 2% since last year.

With a mix of pride, gratitude, and humility, we were excited to read comments such as this one:

From my experience working in the field as well as feedback from our employees who work at other companies throughout the year, I believe APM has the strongest safety culture in the industry.

Key themes from the data show strengths and improvement opportunities …

Relative strengths include:

  1. Adaptability

  2. Job Resources

  3. Learning Culture

Relative opportunities for improvement include:

  1. Work/Life Balance

  2. Transparency

  3. Collaboration

Our core Work/Life Balance question is up 2% from last year, but it remains our greatest opportunity for improvement. We had a few specific actions from the 2021 survey aimed at improving this measure, including the new Business Calendar with defined business periods. 68% of survey participants agreed this tool has been helpful. We will continue leveraging the calendar with the goal of achieving better balance, and we will investigate new solutions to expedite progress in this area.

Over the next few weeks, a volunteer council made up of employees at every level across the organization will dive deeper into the data. We will pay special attention to the commentary provided to understand how best to leverage our strengths and improve on our opportunities. Same as last year, we will publish a plan with defined action steps for the organization to take over the next 6-12 months.

A final note from the results … our purpose question of “My work gives me a sense of personal accomplishment” produced a positive response rate of 85% in agreement. We are thankful for this score and hopeful that you each know how important you are to our APM mission: Empowering the People Who Power Life. YOU make it happen!

Thank you again for your honest feedback (really and truly!). Your voice is valuable and essential in helping APM become the choice employer in our industry.
