Employee Spotlight Meet APM Gas Power Superintendent, Thomas Andrew Sims!
This month’s #EmployeeSpotlight features APM Gas Power Superintendent, Thomas “Andrew” Sims! Andrew has been with the company for 21 years and has made a name for himself though his hard work and determination. In fact, his success pushed him to be nominated for Superintendent of the Year at our most recent Awards Gala! Check out the below to learn more about Andrew and his perspectives on the job.
What are some roles you have at work, and outside of work? (ex. Superintendent, parent, board member, etc.)

What led you to this industry and how did you first learn about APM?
The trades. I joined as a union millwright in 2003 and started working in the power generation industry where I eventually landed a job with APM.
When did you begin working with APM and how many years have you been working with APM?
About 21 years. My first job with APM was in 2004. I’ve worked hundreds of projects with/for APM since.
What’s one thing that surprised you about working with APM?
I would say the opportunities to travel all over the country.
What is a typical workday for you?
Workdays are long and busy, but typically rewarding when you see the positive result brought forth from the planning and teamwork that goes into it.
What energizes you at work?
Results. Seeing everyone unify to safely execute and deliver.
What do you find the most challenging in your role?
Scheduling and balancing things outside of my career are the most challenging.
What do you like most about working with APM?
I enjoy traveling new places, meeting new people, and earning competitive wages.
How has APM helped you in your career development?
It has helped through the extensive training and knowledge that has been passed on to me.
What courses, certifications, or programs did you complete?
Way too many to list. But I’ll name a few. – Advanced Machinery Rigging, OSHA 30, GE Gas & Steam Turbine Qualified, B & E Class turbine engineering, and multiple leadership training modules and seminars through APM, UBC, & Southern Company.
What is your proudest moment with APM?
When I found out APM was interested in making me a Superintendent.
Who has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?
There have been many. The most influential was a Superintendent for Alstom that I worked for early in my career when I was an apprentice. His name was James Haynes. He exemplified honor and integrity and held me to a high standard.
How do you prefer to spend your days off?
I love spending time with the family – traveling, vacationing, fishing and golfing.
How do you balance your career at APM and family?
I try my best to spend quality time with the family when I’m not on projects for APM.
What advice do you have for prospective APM candidates?
Hard work pays off!
What is a non-work-related accomplishment that you’re proud of?
My wife and kids - the great example that she is to them, and the great young adults that they’re becoming.

“Do the right thing, even when no one is looking”
Do you have a nickname at work?
Not so much nowadays. Earlier in my career it was Hollywood.
How do you define success?
Success is being happy and bringing joy to those around you.

“There is no substitute for hard work.”
