Superintendent, Millwright, Home “fix it” guy

What led you to this industry and how did you first learn about APM?

My wife’s family gave me the information on how to become a Millwright. I learned about APM before becoming a Millwright.

When did you begin working with APM and how many years have you been working with APM?

I began working with APM at the beginning of my Millwright career. So far, it’s been twelve years.

What’s one thing that surprised you about working with APM?

The safety culture and being treated like family from the fellow brothers and sisters with APM are what surprised me the most.

What is a typical workday for you?

Starting the day with safety and focusing on the work that’s at hand. Following through and navigating hurdles (if any) with the planned work for the day. Helping out wherever I am needed.

What energizes you at work?

The people on the job keep me energized.

What do you find the most challenging in your role?

Learning to navigate and solve the different obstacles that arise.

What do you like most about working with APM?

I appreciate the willingness to help out. I could call anyone at any point in a day or night with questions or a need for help. The dedication to safety culture throughout everyone follows and strives to make the job better.

How has APM helped you in your career development?

I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the tools and advice from all the journeymen, foremen, and superintendents that I have worked for.

What courses, certifications, or programs did you complete?

 I have completed a four-year Millwright Apprenticeship.

What is your proudest moment with APM?

I’m proud of being recognized as Craftsperson of The Year.

Who has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?

Superintendents, both former and current

How do you prefer to spend your days off?

I prefer them with my wife and grown children as much as possible, also spoiling my two grandchildren.

How do you balance your career at APM and family?

That’s a rough one during outage season, but they do understand what I do to support my family. I take advantage in the off season.

What advice do you have for prospective APM candidates?

Never stop learning! I still learn something new almost daily.

Do you have a nickname at work?

Chalk Box! During one of my first jobs as a millwright, I was asked to grab a chalk box to do some lay out for rollers. The flooring was dark blue and I was trying to do a good job and grabbed a chalk box and made it back to the work area just to find out that the chalk was dark blue.

How do you define success?

Every day is a success as long as you enjoy what you do, and no one gets hurt.

Top three life highlights?

Marrying my best friend Pamela, the birth of my kids, and now my 2 grandkids.

What does true leadership mean to you?

It means being able to juggle all the aspects of what a job may bring.  Being flexible with the time that is allowed to teach and mentor anybody that is on the job is critical.
