Leadership Reflections... 2023 Employee Experience Survey Results from Katie Maldonado & Leslie Jeanes

This week I asked Katie Maldonado, our Communications Director, and Leslie Jeanes, our HR Director, to share with us a summary of our recent Employee Experience Survey results. Thank you to all who shared your feedback – it is a gift.

At the start of June, we relaunched our third annual Employee Experience (EX) Survey. As a reminder, the goal for this process is to LISTEN to YOU … to better understand what YOU value. This helps us know where we meet your expectations and where we could improve your experience and remain your employer of choice.

Even though the summer can be a difficult time to catch all employees, we had 423 out of 702 employees (60% engagement) choose to share insights. This is a 12% increase from last year – AWESOME!

Overall, our core success question of “APM has the right culture for us to be successful in the future” produced a positive response rate of 76% in agreement. This is 1% lower than our score last year and still beats out the industry benchmark at 71% for this question across similar industrial construction companies in North America.

Additionally, our safety question of “APM is a very safe place to work” produced a positive response rate of 88% in agreement. As our keystone, we are proud that this score received the most favorable response among all survey questions.

With a mix of pride, gratitude, and humility, we were excited to read comments such as this one:

“Yes absolutely! This is the most safety conscious employer I have ever worked for. It is at the forefront of everything including every meeting we have with each other. The safety culture and focus is top notch!”

“The teams at APM care about the people working in the field and we are always trying our best to create a proactive environment where the field teams are supported and are able to achieve a zero-incident project.”

Key themes from the data show strengths and improvement opportunities...

Relative strengths include:

  1. Adaptability

  2. Job Resources

  3. Execution

Relative opportunities for improvement include:

  1. Work/Life Balance

  2. Transparency

  3. Collaboration

Over the next few weeks, a volunteer council made up of employees at every level across the organization will dive deeper into the data. If you are interested in participating with the council, please talk to your direct manager and let us know! The council will pay special attention to the commentary provided to understand how best to leverage our strengths and improve on our opportunities. Later this fall, we will publish a plan with defined action steps for the organization to take over the next 6-12 months as recommended by the council.

A final note from the results … our purpose question of “My work gives me a sense of personal accomplishment” produced a positive response rate of 82% in agreement. We are thankful for this score and hopeful that you each know how important you are to our APM mission: Empowering the People Who Power Life. YOU make it happen!

Thank you again for your honest feedback! Your voice is incredibly valuable and essential in helping APM continually improve our culture and your experience.
