Reflections ... Safe Lifting, Integrity/EEO, and Lean
APM Team,
Thank you for your good work during this busy fall outage season, as we continue to have over 2K employees working over 100K hours on over 100 jobsites across North America (and beyond), doing what we do best and what our communities and customers need us to do – keeping power generating equipment running to keep the lights (and heaters) on.
Recently we have focused our fall messaging on Safe Lifting, Integrity/EEO, and CBS. Thank you to those who have engaged in these campaigns. I have enjoyed reading the messages, and even more enjoyed hearing from you in the comments and responses. Below are some of my learnings and reflections from each campaign.
Safe Lifting … Our safe lifting practices apply to all lifts, big and small. As Alex reminded us, it’s the perceived smaller, less significant, less “risky” lifts that often lead to events. How well do we plan and execute these lifts? What good questions do we ask during the pre-lift assessment to challenge our lift plan? What conditions or changes during the lift cause us to STOP and re-assess?
Integrity/EEO … One way I think of integrity is congruency – consistency between talk and action – doing what we say or “practicing what we preach”. This means following our standards such as safety policies and field procedures. How well do we execute to our standards? When do we deviate from standards and why?
CBS … As many in the videos reminded us, CBS is best when it’s a conversation. And the best conversations are when we listen to understand and learn from others. How meaningful are the CBS conversations we have? What are we learning from each other that helps us collectively deliver a safe, quality, good day?
Our next campaign will be a deeper dive on Lean and how it plays a role in both our Field and Corporate settings. I challenge you in advance to engage in the Lean learnings and implement at least one Lean principle in your day-to-day standard work.
It is important to focus on our core values, especially during the height of all of the busyness. I encourage you to take these important messages to heart, and live these learnings daily.
