Reflections ... Employee Experience Survey

As many of our employees will recall, we hosted our first Employee Experience Survey last summer. Following the conclusion of the survey, our workforce reported 76% satisfaction with the workplace culture at APM.

Some of our top successes included:

  • Adaptability … People at APM adapt well to changes.

  • Humanity … People at APM take a genuine interest in each other's well-being.

  • Resources … I have the resources I need to do my job well.

Some of our top opportunities for improvement included:

  • Work Life Balance … I am able to successfully balance my work and personal life.

  • Transparency … People at APM communicate openly and honestly with each other.

  • Timely Decision Making … People at APM make decisions in a timely manner.

Based on these focus areas, our actions over the past year included:

  • Identified “Periods” on the Business Calendar

  • Identified Backups for all Roles

  • Hosted Quarterly Townhall Meetings

  • Educated Employees on Email Management Techniques

Have these actions been valuable?

Next Friday, you will receive an invite for our next Employee Experience Survey, and everyone will have 21 days to share their feedback for this question. We hope you will take the opportunity to tell us what is going well and where we can further improve.

One specific action we have put a lot of focus on is the Business Calendar with clearly segmented “Periods”. The goal of this calendar is to help us all achieve better work life balance by classifying core focus areas throughout different times of year – outage season focus time, project and learning/development focus time, and personal refresh focus time.

To further this cause as we enter the summer months and transition our focus, we will be implementing some additional actions through Labor Day – see below.

  • Eliminate all APM non-outage critical Friday meetings and calls

    • (use this day for personal work and flex time with the family)

  • Take 30 minutes every day to focus on your personal development

    • (read an article or watch a video … you are empowered to block this time on your calendar)

  • Limit evening emails after 7:00 pm

    • (unless outage critical, consider taking 24-48 hours to respond thoughtfully)

We genuinely want APM to become the employer of choice in our industry (NAM power generation union construction), and we need your feedback to help us get there. Thank you for sharing YOUR voice!

Finally, I leave you with one of my cherished Memorial Day traditions. I will listen to this fifteen minute podcast read by Jocko Willink titled Don’t Forget to Smile. Whatever you do this weekend – get a little exercise in (maybe you’ll do a Murph), watch a little baseball or softball (Go ‘Stros!), or spend some time in the yard or pool or grill, I pray you have plenty of smiles, and you remember those who gave all for our liberty to enjoy life with those we love.

And for those 2K craft who are still working in the Field, and for those who support them 24/7 … THANK YOU!

May we all enjoy a safe, healthy, blessed weekend.
