Reflections...Integrity

Next week is our bi-annual discussion with you about one of our core values, Integrity. Our discussion will include email communications, jobsite toolbox talks or pre-meeting culture moments, and daily OutageBuzz Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter social media profiles. Everyone in APM = YOU! are encouraged to engage in our discussion.

If you look up definitions of integrity, you often find multiple definitions and quotes. One of my favorite quotes about integrity comes from our own Coleen Glasscock (our APM + APCom Finance Coordinator). Why? Because as I read this quote it reminds me of two aspects of Integrity.

  1. Integrity is about being whole. My basic test of integrity – Am I who I say I am? Do my actions reflect the person I say I am? Am I the same person in all walks of life (in the home, in the church, in the office, in the field, in the community)?

  2. Integrity is a team sport. Please remember this: Every one of us has an impact on the APM reputation for integrity. What we do daily, whether it be accurately reporting numbers or stopping work when something is not right, collectively builds our reputation for integrity.

    Allow me to elaborate on these daily examples.

    First, this week Bruce Bever (our CFO) and I signed off on our Q1 numbers. I am proud of the Q1 financials we turned in, and there will be a time to share more about that. But what I reflect on is that the numbers Bruce and I attest to are the collection of every APM person’s integrity. From the Craftsperson who accurately reports their time worked, to the Superintendent who signs off on the collective time sheets, to the Payroll Specialist who accurately submits payment, to the Billing Specialist who accurately submits invoices, and so on … Bruce & I are relying on every single 7K people we employ each year to have integrity in what they say and do. Yes, we have controls in place to help maintain integrity, but we still and must rely on YOU! Because of our confidence in YOU, we can proudly sign the financial reports.

    Second, yesterday we highlighted a STOP moment by Daryl Hale and his team at an Entergy site in Louisiana. This was powerful for a few reasons.

    First, the STOP moment involved the integrity of a lift we were preparing for. As you know, safe lifting and rigging is a major focus for us and our GE partners – it’s a life saving principle and it’s the number one category for potentially severe events.

    Second, Entergy is a customer who has questioned our culture, and for good reason. Two years ago we were at Entergy headquarters to answer those questions. We put on a good presentation, but the feedback was crystal clear – “I want to see the culture you preach being practiced in the field.” To have an Entergy rep now say in response to a STOP moment, “This shows a very strong culture”, well that speaks volumes.

    Finally, Daryl is one of our newer Superintendents. I appreciate that it is sometimes hard to STOP a job, knowing the impact it may have on other deliverables like cost and schedule. Although we all wish everyone would receive a STOP moment with thanks, not everyone does. To have a Daryl’s team STOP, to have Daryl stand up for the STOP, and for Daryl and his team to trust that APM leadership will stand with him on the STOP, well that is a great example of integrity being a team sport.

    Thank you Coleen & Daryl for inspiring me. I look forward to being inspired even more by all our engagement in the integrity focus next week.
