Reflections ... WHY! and WIN! Focuses

Safety First, Safety Always

First, I want to remind us that the safety and health of our people are always at the forefront. As you have seen through other business communications, we are continually monitoring the situation surrounding the Coronavirus and collaborating with all business teams to ensure we are taking appropriate measures for mitigation. This is both a critical time and a valuable opportunity to demonstrate our WHY! – APM is a people business, and what we do impacts an infinite number of people beyond APM … in the power and construction industries, in our communities, in our homes. Please make every effort to take necessary precautions, and help us keep safety and health at the CORE of what we do. Below are a few quick links with resources.

Reflections from Q1 All Hands Event

I would also like to thank everyone who joined our Q1 All Hands Event last week or watched it on the YouTube channel afterwards. Hopefully you heard a concise message from our Chief leaders regarding our current focus – what we need to do to WIN! (What’s Important Now). Allow me to summarize below.

Accountability (High Say/Do)

Dan provided a summary of our accountability focus with the statement, “Own your job.” Our leaders have given further explanation of what that means. We expect all teams and roles to work according to their job description, be transparent with goals, embrace consequences, and maintain regular rhythms of communication.

Safety Keystone Philosophy

Safety is not a priority; Safety is our CORE and the keystone. Our safety toolbox (CBS, STA, HOP, STOP, Hazard Hunts, Leadership Tools) will deliver excellence in all performance categories (quality, integrity, competitiveness). Our safety culture is the top driver of our credibility with customers and shareholders – we must continue the improvement to further gain our seat at key tables.

Lean

We will continue to build our Lean muscle with focused projects that remove wasteful activities and allow you to truly focus on value added work.

Compete

We will begin to take ownership and prove our value story, i.e., How our APM inputs (Xs) deliver customer and shareholder outcomes (Ys) and experiences (😊).

Stay the Course

We are now in the throes of outage season. I know you all feel it. When times get tough in this VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) world, return to our WHY! and our WIN! focus points. Own your job. Keep safety our keystone. Use Lean to focus on value added work. Share how APM delivers value to customers and shareholders.

I referenced outstanding customer feedback for APM Superintendent, Larry Johnson, during the Q1 All Hands Event last week. You can read more in this blog story. These are the reports that confirm we are winning. The WIN! focus points we have are effective. We just need to remain diligent. Thanks again to Larry and his excellent team for living the APM WHY! And WIN! on their jobsite – our customers noticed the difference, and we know others will too.
