APM Recognized as an Industry Leader for Safety by Bruce Power

Safety is what we do - how we walk, how we talk, how we live at APM. And we strive to influence everyone we encounter, whether in a personal or work setting, to embrace a strong safety culture because each person’s health and well-being is worth the time and effort it takes to mitigate hazards.

Our APM U.S. Steam Services and Canadian Specialty Services teams recently collaborated on a job at Bruce Nuclear Generating Station in Tiverton, Ontario, along with GE and FieldCore. During the project, the teams were recognized for their outstanding safety culture and processes. Planning, pre-work, and access training for the project began in early Fall 2018, and the crews initiated the main scope – generator upgrade, redesign, retrofit and rewind – in late November. Our APM craft teams completed more than 84,000 hours between day and night shifts with ZERO recordable injuries and delivered an excellent product and service experience upon completion in March 2019.

This success was achieved through rigorous execution of our APM Safety Toolkit. The jobsite had outstanding housekeeping and full engagement from all craft in the daily hazard analysis discussions and safety briefings. Safe rigging practices were used, and the overall safety culture was built to promote proactive behaviors, leveraging our Commitment-Based Safety philosophy, our safety recognition program, STOP work authority, detailed hazard hunts, and craft and customer involvement.

Additionally, the alignment and partnership between site safety and craft leadership was instrumental in the achievement of the onsite safety culture. Our Superintendents, Terry Jennings (day shifts) and Isaac Smith (night shifts) worked in unison with Site Safety Specialists, Ron Dunbar (day shifts) and Mohamed Ali (night shifts) to set the expectation for full engagement in daily safety management.

We extend a special thanks to several others who were instrumental in the project’s success … additional craft leadership, John Whitelaw, Alex Hogg, and Deryk Swayze, who exhibited strong expertise and coaching support to the other craft, our site clerk, Peyton Lumzy, who contributed extraordinary dedication to the project despite long holiday hours away from home, our Service Manager, Gary Vanderloo, who worked diligently on bidding and execution planning, and the Project Manager, Paul Mahe, who lead the detailed planning from the very beginning to ensure project success. Most of the work scope was completed during our Canadian businesses’ highest volume season in history, and we are grateful for the team who pulled together to make it happen with excellence.

Following the project’s completion, the teams were recognized by the Customer Project Manager by stating:

“I can say that your program and personnel were recognized as an industry leader in EHS…”

During the project planning and throughout execution, the customer was highly complementary of APM’s Safety Toolkit and even leveraged some of our tools for their own processes at the site.

The APM family is enormously proud of the success accomplished by these expert craft teams in partnership with GE and FieldCore and we are confident the recognition of our world-class safety culture will lead to further work opportunities with Bruce Power and additional customers in the surrounding areas. We extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to every person involved on this project for representing our brand and safety culture with excellence. YOU are the reason APM is recognized as an industry leader for construction and maintenance solutions in the power industry.
