Get the Buzz ... | APM Renewables Provide Invaluable Support on the 1st Offshore Wind Project In US

Estimated Read Time: 4 minutes

In New Bedford, Massachusetts, APM Renewables supports the onshore portion of the ongoing Offshore Vineyard Wind Project. The Vineyard Wind Project is the 1st offshore wind energy project undertaken in the United States, and APM Renewables is supporting this endeavor every step of the way! Since the start of this ongoing project on August 6th, 2023, APM Renewables has accumulated 9,942 manhours with zero recordable issues, first aid, or quality events, and they continue to deliver excellence while onsite to this present day.

Responsible for all supportive work for the installation of the turbines, the APM Renewables Team worked on extensive scopes including, but not limited to, the QCT modification upgrade on the spreader beam, several custom modifications to equipment and support tooling at the direction of GE Vernova, turbine blade racking, and working on barge vessels transporting pieces of the windmill back and forth from on shore to offshore. With 72 countries involved, over 50 engineers on site, and over 10 years in planning for this project, the Vineyard Wind Project is exceptionally large scale and an exciting opportunity! APM is proud to support Vineyard Wind 1 in their 1st venture into offshore wind energy. Vineyard Wind 1 is the first of 13 offshore wind farms to be built at this project and the 1st of 62 turbines of 2000 total.

With so many literal and figurative moving parts, APM Superintendents have done a phenomenal job leading the day and night shift crews composed of 30 millwrights, 5 pipefitters, 3 electricians, and 7 riggers, adding up to a total of 45 craftspeople! Balancing such a large crew and operation, the APM Renewables Team has exemplified the importance of teamwork, patience, and coordination in working together with GE Vernova towards the goal of renewable wind energy.

We’d like to highlight the APM Dayshift Superintendents who have been on site playing a critical role in leading the success of this project since the beginning of the outage:

  • APM Project Superintendent, Dave Sturgis, who started with APM in 2002 and has over 30,000 manhours with APM. Dave also led 5 crews simultaneously on this project!

  • APM Superintendent, Jeff Campanale, who started with APM in 1987 and has vast experience with multi craft projects.  He has over 40,643 manhours!

We’d also like to express appreciation for the other day shift superintendents, Jeff Henderson and Jeff McElyea, and the night shift superintendents, James Donovan, Richard Plante, and William Morris, for their exceptional leadership and prioritization of safety and quality. Additionally, we’d like to recognize Joshua Parker, the APM Operations Project Coordinator, who has also been a vital support on site since the start of this project.

Lastly, we’d like to thank the entire APM Renewables Team and Don Lacroix, our Division Operations Manager, for their support work and crucial role in the success of the Vineyard Wind Project! What an exciting project for APM in the future of energy!
