APM Steam Nuclear Meets Critical Lift with a Questioning Attitude, Commitment to Safety, and Strong Quality Execution

A strong questioning attitude and commitment to safety recently brought APM Steam Nuclear and site teams a valuable STOP moment at Canadian-owned Bruce Power, a nuclear generating station. This STOP moment allowed all teams to reconvene and reset safety as the primary goal during a critical lift.

While scheduled to make a lift from the crane bay to the operating deck, the rigging team was aware of the 200-ton maximum lifting capacity of the main hoist. From advance calculations, the shipping crate and the rotor together were anticipated to cap at a total weight of 197.4 tons. However, when the load reached 200 tons, the rigging team’s operator communicated this to their signaler. The scheduled lift was stopped, and our expert APM team initiated a discussion with Bruce Power’s site team.

They collaborated on a revised plan to proceed with a safe and successful lift. APM, GE, and Bruce Power worked together on a solution that involved removal of the rotor from the shipping crate and successfully set the rotor into a designated location.

A Cohesive Team = A Safety Win

Our expert rigging team remained vigilant and stayed in constant communication to conduct the new lift plan.

Everyone handled it well and displayed great judgement in stopping when unsure and regrouping for a new plan,” commented GE Customer Service Manager, Matthew Prior.

Ryan Lappan, Randy McDonald, Blake McKinlay, Jarret Thompson, Mike Nyp, Cory Harteveld, Brandon Sullivan, Shaun Byrne, Jeremy Kerr, Tim McGrory, and Galen Frost were each recognized for their good questioning attitude, high attentiveness, and skilled judgement.

Customer Praise

A customer representative recognized our teams for going above and beyond to deliver their high quality and safe execution at the site.

“It is much appreciated and has not gone unnoticed on our side,” praised a customer representative for Bruce Power.

Thank you to APM Steam Nuclear, GE, and Bruce Power for delivering a valuable STOP moment to ensure the safety of all!
