Leadership Reflections – Safety and Quality Leaders: Fall Focus

APM Team,

Last summer we came together and embraced the challenge to improve our Safety & Quality … and we did. A year later, we came together again to recognize that improvement, reflect on what we did well and still strive to improve further. Thank YOU! for the improvements made after last year’s challenges and the good engagement in the Safety & Quality Culture Summit last week.

Your commitment to safety elevates all of APM. Our data shows that those who choose to attend the S&Q Training lead safer jobs – they are 35% less likely to have an injury on a job.

You have heard and will continue to hear … our focuses are:

  • Life Saving Rules: Mechanical Lifting, Working at Heights, Driving Safely, Line of Fire, Work Authorization, Confined Space, Energy Isolation, Live Electrical, Fire and Explosion

  • Fall Playbook: Mentor Program, WHWH, Non-standard Work

  • Risk Management: Crew Planning, Parameter Sheet, Peer Checks, Leave Your Mark, Fatigue Management

These elements are crucial as we enter the Fall outage season, and they reflect our collective dedication to safer jobs and better outcomes.

If you attended last week, you received a book in your goodie bag. The importance of the “Checklist Manifesto” lies in its reminder that no matter how specialized or well-trained we are, mistakes can still happen when steps are missed. My expectation is that we embrace standards (ex: checklists) that help us deliver consistent, excellent outcomes.

We’ve had a strong first eight months of the year; let’s finish the last four months with the same strength and deliver an excellent 2024.
