Get the Buzz ... APM Canada Demonstrates Diligence, Quality, and Improvement for Excellent Outage at Strathcona!

Estimated Read Time: 5 minutes

At Imperial Oil Strathcona Refinery in Edmonton, Alberta, APM Canada mobilized for a Frame 6B Hot Gas Path with Generator Minor Inspection. Over the course of the project, the team accumulated 4,755.5 hours with zero safety or quality incidents!

To tackle the job scope, several pre-outage planning meetings were held with involvement from GE, Fieldcore and APM, including a Lean Action workout that was held onsite with the customer. After planning concluded, the site setup crew began preparations on August 26th, 2024, with the rest of the team mobilizing for mechanical work from September 1st to September 16th. A small team stayed for site cleanup and support until September 21st.

The guidance of the below leadership team empowered the crew of 28 people to achieve excellence on this outage! Thank you all for your hard work!

  • Dayshift Superintendent – Jim Whitfield

  • Dayshift Foreman – Sheldon Malica

  • Dayshift Site Safety Professional – Mo Ali

  • Nightshift Superintendent – John Edgar

  • Nightshift Foreman – Sean Dunlop

  • Nightshift Site Safety Professional – John Berry

This outage was not without its challenges. Although the site teams have some experience on Frame 6B Gas Turbines, there is a limited number of them within the region. This unit posed several unique challenges due to the design of the Turbine compartment and the Co-Gen building itself. Since this was the first time the team worked extensively within this building, several scope changes were made throughout the outage. The team also encountered a stop moment during the Turbine Case lift, when it was discovered that some of the structural components could interfere with the rigging for the lift. After careful consideration, the site team decided to disassemble an additional section of the Turbine compartment to ensure the lift could be done properly and safely. This diligence allowed the team to safely execute quality work!

The APM Canada team also demonstrated their dedication to learning and efficiency. This job was the first 6B Hot Gas Path in the region to follow the new Live Outage sequencing. The team made efforts to adopt and implement the new standards to improve and optimize this outage and future jobs as well! The site team showed an incredible amount of discipline and patience while navigating unforeseen difficulties and were able to maintain the highest level of safety and quality standards, resulting in a 5-star Customer Experience Score!

How did the Life Saving rules play a role in this outage?

Due to the design of the 6B Hot Gas Path, the crew had to remain vigilant with adhering to the Working at Heights policies and procedures. The disassembly of the compartment can be challenging. It takes proper planning and foresight to ensure the work can be done safely and efficiently.
