Safety Discussions from the Heart have a Resounding Impact

The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires but, in his integrity and ability to affect those around him positively" - Bob Marley

We recognize Superintendent, Larry Johnson, and his Steam Team in living and teaching our safety and quality pedestals at Crescent Dunes Solar. Johnson said, “All the praise and success goes to the team for performing the work. I could not honestly do this without my team and the pride they take in their work.”

His 8-person crew was mobilized in late January to do majors on HP-IP/LP, provide generator work on bearings, and to support generator specialists with magic inspection on an Alstom unit.

“This is more about my team putting in their hard work more than myself”, said Johnson.

While reading through the field procedure, a team member identified formaldehyde in the generator. This challenge was overcome with success because the right precautions were enacted, and the right personnel was involved.

“I have a great group of millwrights out here, and every one of them take pride in safety – quality – integrity.”

We commend Johnson in his mastery of having meaningful safety conversations. He demonstrates the importance of getting all team members involved. Generally, he reviews the work scope and describes his five daily EHS focuses based on the tasks at hand. Johnson tails his discussion with a momentous question, “what can I do better to help this team?”

Johnson's safety conversations are so compelling that he catalyzes the same drive in people outside of his crew who have the chance to listen in.

Michael Crislip, a consulting engineer who had the pleasure of working with Johnson, said "When he talks to his crew about his concern for their safety, not only do they believe it, but I do as well”. “It has been a true honor to work with him … I have no fears or qualms about the quality of his work or his diligence towards the safety of his employees," said Crislip.

It’s easy to talk about the core values we hold so close to us, but to become a living embodiment that spreads inspiration to those around them is a new height we each aspire to achieve.

Thank you, Larry, for your safety leadership, and to your team for taking pride in their stellar work which is key in empowering trust from customers and project partners during this outage season.
