Reflections... STOP Culture

APM Team,

Good execution thus far this outage season. With the exception of a rough couple days in early October when we had two craft injuries, we have kept our people 100% safe thus far this fall. There may be a number of reasons why, and I assure you we will dive deep in reviewing this fall to learn why in prep for the spring. One reason why that is on my mind right now is our STOP culture.

Reflections... Labor Day

Labor Day

This coming Monday is Labor Day. The U.S. Department of Labor states that Labor Day “constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.” APM especially values this day because it was started in the unions as a day to commemorate hard work. All of your dedication and hard work throughout this “unprecedented” (we seem to use this word a lot now) year is very much appreciated.

Reflections ... Safety Data Trends

This commonly stated quote was repeated in a meeting I joined in Atlanta this past week. The meeting was a review of recent safety performance. Using a lean tool called the PSR (Problem Solving Report), we dug into the data to identify trends, with the goal of (i) taking immediate action to prevent injuries today and (ii) taking long term action to get better at preventing injuries in the future.

Reflections ... Holiday Break

Hopefully over the holidays you got time to relax, connect with family and friends, and enjoy some holiday traditions. One of our traditions is watching great Christmas movies like It’s A Wonderful Life and Die Hard and The Christmas Story. If you have seen the last one, you know exactly the context of the above exclamation from the hero, Ralphie. When asked by his saint of a mother, “Where did you hear that word?”, Ralphie’s inner voice responds, “Now I had heard that word at least 10 times a day from my old man.”
